Is Bran Castle Worth Visiting? An Honest Answer
Yes — but not for the reason it is sold, and not at eleven in the morning in August.
The Dracula question, settled
Vlad III Țepeș, the historical figure behind the name, was never lord of Bran. He may have passed through the customs post below it, and may have been briefly imprisoned nearby. Bram Stoker never visited Romania and described a castle in the Borgo Pass, hundreds of kilometres north.
Bran acquired the association in the twentieth century because it looks the part. That is the whole story, and the castle is better off without it.
What is actually good about it
The site: a rock in the throat of a mountain pass, with a fourteenth-century fortress on top of it. And the interiors, which Queen Marie of Romania furnished in the 1920s with genuine taste — narrow stairs, low doors, courtyard wells, and rooms that feel lived in rather than staged.
When to go
First hour of opening, any day. By half past ten the staircases become a slow single file. Winter is quietest and, with snow on the roofs, the most atmospheric. Book tickets ahead in July and August.
What to pair it with
Râșnov Fortress, twenty minutes away, gives you the view Bran cannot. The Libearty bear sanctuary at Zărnești makes the morning worth getting up for. Together the three make the most-requested day we run.
