The Saxon Fortified Churches: A Practical Guide
Nearly two hundred fortified churches survive in Transylvania. You need three, and this is how to choose them.
Why the churches are fortified at all
German settlers arrived in the twelfth century on an invitation from the Hungarian crown, and were given land on the exposed southern edge of the kingdom. Ottoman and Tatar raids came regularly and no army came with them, so each village walled its church and stocked it: grain cells, wells, smokehouses, and rooms for every family inside the ring.
The result is a defensive architecture found almost nowhere else in Europe, and seven of the villages are UNESCO listed.
Prejmer — the most complete
Prejmer is the strongest fortified church in eastern Europe and only twenty minutes from Brașov. The ring holds 272 storage cells over four floors, each one a family's room during a siege. Allow an hour and a half; it is on a Monday-closure schedule like most.
Viscri — the one people mean
Whitewashed, lime-painted and blue-doored, Viscri became famous through King Charles's involvement in the village. It is worth it anyway: the church is twelfth-century, the lane is unpaved, and outside July the place is almost empty. Ninety minutes from Brașov, with the last few kilometres on a country road.
Biertan and the further ones
Biertan has three defensive walls and the famous marital lock-in room, where couples who wanted to divorce were shut inside together for two weeks with one bed and one plate. Two divorces in three hundred years, so the record speaks for itself. It is two hours from Brașov and best combined with Sibiu or Mediaș rather than visited alone.
How many fit in one day
