The Saxons arrived in the twelfth century and fortified their churches because nobody else was coming to defend them. Prejmer is the most complete fortified church in eastern Europe; Viscri is the whitewashed village that made the region famous. Both are UNESCO listed, and neither is crowded on a weekday.

- The last stretch is a narrow country road, recently improved. It is fine in a car; it is not a road you want to find with a rental map at dusk.
