The Transfăgărășan is only open from around the start of July to the end of October, and it rewards an early start: the cloud sits on the ridge by mid-afternoon in summer. We climb from the north, stop where the view is worth stopping, and reach Bâlea Lake at 2,034 metres with the day still clear.
- The full northern ascent with hairpins and waterfalls
- Bâlea Lake at the top of the pass
- A long day — twelve hours is normal, and we plan for it
- Warm layers matter; it can be ten degrees colder at the lake

Questions guests ask
- When is the Transfăgărășan open?
- Usually from late June or early July until the end of October, depending on snow. Outside that window the top section is closed and we would suggest Bâlea by cable car or another day entirely.
- How long is the day?
- Eleven to twelve hours from Brașov. It is the longest trip we run, and the planner flags it as such rather than pretending otherwise.
- Is it suitable for children?
- For older children, yes. For toddlers, the sustained mountain driving is a lot to ask.
